8. But I have always been told differently. How do I know what is true?
The things God says in His Word are more important than the things people say. God's Word is truth (John 8:31,32 and John 17:17). Examine what the Bible says to discover what is the truth, and don't forget to consider the context in which certain Bible verses are given.
- Isaiah 43:18,19 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
- Isaiah 43:27b And thy teachers have transgressed against me.
- John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
- Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
- Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
- Romans 12:2b But be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
- Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
- Galatians 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
- 1 Thessalonians 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
- 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
- 1 John 4:1a Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.
- 1 John 5:9-12 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
